5 Things to Consider When Relocating
Making the decision to relocate is a serious matter, and as such, it requires some serious thought. It’s one thing to move across town, but another thing entirely to relocate over a larger distance. Sometimes the decision is made for you–a job transfer that is not optional, a job loss or family situation that requires moving–but other times, relocation is just for the sake of relocation. If you are thinking about moving, make sure to take these 5 points into consideration before you make a commitment.
Why are you moving to?
Take a good look at yourself and your motivation to relocate. a change will improve things? It’s not uncommon for people to move after a breakup or divorce, or looking for a fresh start. You may have moved to your current location for a job that didn’t turn out as well as you had hoped. These reasons for moving are not unreasonable, but it’s important, to be honest with yourself about why you are moving.
Will you be able to find a job?
Unless you are moving because of a job transfer, make sure that your new location has a decent job market in your field. Reach out to job prospects before you make any serious relocation plans. Your best bet, of course, is to have a job lined up before moving. If you are moving because of a job transfer, ask about relocation assistance from your current employer.
What is the cost of living in your future city?
Certain areas of the country are more affordable than others. Make a realistic assessment of your projected earnings after relocation, then gather info about the cost of living in the place you hope to move. Will you be able to buy a home or will you rent? In addition to the cost of housing, think about the cost of utilities, groceries, and transportation. Get a feel for what your budget might look like there and what kind of lifestyle you will be able to afford.
What will your quality of life be like?
A lot of the research into the cost of living will give you a look into what your day-to-day life will be like. Is the area urban, suburban, or rural? Will you walk to work? Take public transportation? Face a lengthy commute? Some people find a commute relaxing, others find it stressful. Some people love public transportation and others hate it. Is the area you’re considering relocating to safe, with a low crime rate? No one likes to worry about break-ins or muggings.
What is there to do in your down time?
While we spend a lot of time on the job, we don’t spend all of our time on the job. Think about which activities outside of work are most important to you and find out whether your target area offers them. Do you love the outdoors? You can look for bike trails or hiking options. Are you into the arts and cultural experiences? Look for museums, art galleries, and theaters. Whatever your lifestyle is, the perfect home is waiting for you in the area you desire.
