The student population is large and diverse, with roughly 12,000 students, representing a number races and nationalities. The student population is 60% Hispanic, 17% African American, 13% Caucasian, and 10% Asian or other race.
Schooling Models
To meet the diverse needs of this student body, Lancaster School District offers a few different school options. The traditional school model is made up of 12 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, and 2 high schools. There is also one larger elementary school that houses grades K-8. For students for whom the traditional model is not a good fit, the School District of Lancaster has a few other options.
Alternatives
Phoenix Academy is a magnet school with just 300 students for grades 6-12. Buehrle Alternative is for students in grades 6-11 who have struggled with behavioral challenges in the traditional classroom. Cyber Learning is a program to allow students to continue their education from home. At the high school level, there are several dual enrollment opportunities at local colleges for students to earn college credits at no cost while still attending high school.
